Gambling Again...

To get serious for a minute about the question of gambling... specifically the role that government plays in the spread of gambling. I just don't think the government should be in the gambling business, period. Yes, there is big money in it, but there is big money in porn too and you don't see Governor Pataki renting out the executive's mansion for hard core video shoots.

Whether or not you think it should be banned - - I lean towards that but have a libertarian streak that makes me second guess that position - - it strikes me as immoral for the government to profit on such an industry. And, though it would hurt me as a taxpayer, it isn't something I can support.

Yes, I like to gamble with friends - - as our football pool here demonstrates. But that doesn't mean that I want to profit (as a taxpayer) on people who are addicted to the lottery. Make it legal, tax it, I could live with that. But just as I don't think it would be right for a state to operate a chain of malt liquor stores in run down areas, I don't think it is right for the state to run a lottery, or a racetrack or to carve out special deals with a small number of indians (er.. native americans) to build casinos across the state.

Where do you guys stand?
