The Red-Blue Divide
Like many of you, I believe that there is an irreconcilable cultural divide in the United States that will continue to polarize the nation. This cultural divide is deepest on fundamentally core issues such as life and the role of religion in public institutions, but touches nearly every public policy issue in some way or another.
The problem stems, in my view, from the fact that we have federalized nearly all issues -- employment, speech, criminal justice, environmental regulations and land use, taxation, the economy, health care, property rights, public religion, sports, education, etc., etc., etc.
There are very few laboratories of democracy any longer, and we no longer have the freedom to "vote with our feet." That was the beauty of the American experiment and I'm sorry to report to Benjamin Franklin that "we weren't able to keep it."
Short of a revolution -- which I am not advocating -- I don't see either side of the divide winning any time soon, although I am pessimistic about the Red chances of prevailing in the long term.
I don't know what the solution is, except an unrealistic Constitutional amendment prohibiting the federal government and courts from dealing with many of these issues. But I think too many horses have left the barn for even something like that.
JPC, have you found that Carribean Island yet?
