U.S. Senate Changes

Sen. Jim 'Turncoat' Jeffords (I - People's Republic of Vermont) announced today that he is retiring at the end of the next year.

Republicans maintain a 55-44-1 majority in the Senate.

In 2006, the Democrats have to defend 17 seats and the Republicans 15. Five D-seats are in red states, 3 R-seats are in blue states.

Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-MD) , Mark Dayton (D-MN), and Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) have already announced that they will be retiring at the same time. Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ) is running in the 2005 New Jersey governor's race. Hutchison (TX) may run for governor.

Up in 2006 are D's Cantwell (WA), Stabenow (MI), and Nelson (FL), along with Corzine and Dayton, won by les than 51%. R's Talent (MO) and Burns (MT) won with less than 51%.

Sen. Byrd (WV) will be 88 years old. Sen. Akaka (HI) will be 82 years old. WV was a red state in 2000 and 2004. Rep. Linda Lingle became the first GOP governor of HI in '02.

The outlook is becoming interesting.
