Happy Belated New Year!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Anyone else celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany last week? With a little thought, it can be a fun day with the kids.
Dow over 11,000, unemployment still way down, interest rates holding - all despite the anchor of high energy prices.
Alito hearings going along. I've been enjoying watching as the Senate Democrats continue to flounder (not just on Alito). Yesterdays attacks won't bode well for them either - polling has shown that people don't like seeing the judges attacked. It may help a few of the most liberal D's with their base, but will alienate many, especially in the middle.
The Delay issue does not look good, but I think mostly for Delay. I believe that people outside the beltway don't really understand it, and with him having been demonized for years I'm hoping that the few who may be paying attention view it as business as usual. Despite that, there have already been reprocussions, with the House Republicans having trouble staying together on a few votes late last year. That would not have happened with Delay in full participation.
The effect of the Abramoff scandal will be interesting. The Washington Post likes to keep pointing the finger at the GOP, but there are as many Dems., including leadership, wrapped up in the mess. For the record, I do oppose any new legislation, rules, or regulations to place further restrictions on lobbyists and lobbying activity. The laws work, and there are always a few that will flaunt them and try to work around them. Lobbying is protected by the Constitution. The oft forgotten part of the First Amendment is the right "to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
Fourth quarter earnings for the oil and natural gas industries get reported before the end of January - which will be another distraction for the Hill.
More to come.
