Thoughts and Comments

Hope everyone had a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving.

- Sip,
Huckabee is not a conservative. I cannot support him. His record on important issues, including tax and spend, are not good. Nor do I care for his position on energy issues. He talks a good game, but is "all hat and no cattle" as we say in Texas. He is a squish.

"America has allowed itself to become enslaved to Saudi oil. It's absurd. It's embarrassing." - We import more oil from Canada than any other country. Are we enslaved to the Canadians? With the direction that we are going in on national health care maybe we are closer than I thought.

Huckabee said "I would make the United States energy independent within 10 years and tell the Saudis they can keep their oil just like they can keep their sand, that we won't need either one of them." - Foolish, stupid. The federal government's Energy Information Agency has stated that by their estimates, oil and natural gas will be American's principle form of energy for the next 75 years. Unless Huckabee plans to allow for the drilling of thousands of wells over the next few years, 'energy independence' is not happening. I would conclude that he is pandering to the farm belt and the enviros and plans to make Americans and the American economy suffer through higher food prices and greater subsidies to Archer Daniels Midland, Goldmann Sachs, and a bunch of farmers and venture capitalists that cry that they missed the peak in the bubble (high cotton).

- I also won't take the bait again on your paying more for gasoline. I've addressed this too many times. You are already paying higher energy costs to protect these areas, so take the family to enjoy the outdoors in the Rockies, Gulf Coast of Florida, Eastern Coast of the U.S., northern Alaska, the Great Lakes, etc. - your paying for it. Enjoy your cleaner air. Enjoy the higher food costs and less mileage that come with ethanol and know that you've put the smile on the face of a farmer and some Wall Street capitalists that is willing to line his pockets with your cash. Ethanol = The Emperor's New Clothes. Read Atlas Shrugged for more insight on America's energy policy and our economy's future.

- Comment on the November elections. Virginia has officially become a Northeastern state based on politics and voting characteristics. I no longer consider it a Southern state. It has been moving in that direction, but it is now official. I am waiting for my taxes to go up.

Comments:
JPC,

Appreciate your thoughts.

Huckabee is not bulletproof in my opinion - especially his domestic actions and policies. I do like him more than the others, who flip, are squishy, or are anything but conservative on their social policies.

Regarding oil, I am in favor of anyone who wants to look for more domestic sources of crude. Yes, we import the most from Canada, and it's easy to pile on the Middle East in campaign times. However, I'd love to unshackle from them.

My company does work with the Nuculear Regulatory Commission. There has not been a nuclear plant built in 30 years...but they are gearing up for applications to come in. To say something nice about France, they are way ahead of pretty-much anyone with nuclear power. I also like wind energy - sure it's not super efficient, but those huge windmills alongLake Erie and the Pennsylvalia pike I'm sure more than make up for their cost. However, we'll be an oil country for the rest of our lifetimes.

I agree with you completely with your assessment on Virginia - it has been trending blue for a while, and they might be over the apex now. They still have a lot of catching up to do to achieve the rock bottom deep blue status of Maryland. The state capital just passed more taxes on everyone - corporations, individuals, higher sales tax, etc, without cutting any spending.
